At SRI, we forge simplicity for elected officials by making the responsibility of conducting government auctions effortless.
Customizable auction technology allows us to service areas outside of our hometown. As a result, we are the leader in Indiana with a presence in Florida, Colorado, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania.
Our newest product, document management, cuts down on routine processes for elected officials by eliminating the hassle of paperwork.
Jim E. Hughes, Founder
In the late 1980s, Indiana treasurers were charged with the responsibility of collecting unpaid real estate taxes by the state statutes. Treasurers were not holding tax sales as a means of collecting delinquent taxes because the statutes held the Treasurer personally responsible for any errors in the tax sales.
An auditor in the State Board of Accounts suggested that I help the Treasurers in conducting their tax sales. I accepted this challenge and contracted with three counties in 1990 to conduct all of the work in noticing, advertising and conducting the auction. This “cradle-to-grave” concept was accepted by the treasurers because it saved them the work of conducting their tax sale.
As a result, I established SRI, Synergistic Resources Integration, and in the years that followed additional counties contracted with us to help perform their tax sales. Each year we kept adding more counties by 1992 we had 6, in 1994 we had 15, by 1996 we were up to 36, and now we service 84 of the 92 Indiana counties. In addition, we’ve grown into 5 additional states.
As an entrepreneur, I wanted to provide other services for local government, naturally, some of those attempts worked and others did not. One successful venture has been assisting Sheriffs in mortgage foreclosure sales. Now we assist 34 Indiana county sheriffs with this process. We’ve also assisted 49 counties in collecting several million dollars from fraudulent homestead deductions. In addition, we are currently implementing a Document Management program for local government officials.
During the early stages of our company’s development, there was a culture of service to our customers by being open and honest. So far, our effort to create this culture has served us well. We still cultivate this culture by operating transparently and maintain open lines of communication with our customers.
Since retiring in March of 2015, I’ve turned the company over to my son, James B. Hughes. James B. comes to our company after 32 years in Johnson Controls Inc. serving in several executive leadership positions. His experience will bring new insights and concepts to SRI.
We look forward to many more services being made available to local governments nationwide.
